Alumni Spotlights | Brian Galicia ’96 of Microsoft

“(Networking is) about genuine connections, not just collecting contacts. Approach it with curiosity and a willingness to learn from others.”

Brian Galicia ’96 has long been Puget Sound’s go-to for LinkedIn and networking expertise. He’s a LinkedIn Top Voice and has literally written a book on the topic: Navigating LinkedIn for Sales. Brian regularly returns to campus to share his knowledge with Logger students — to help you level up your skills.

Until Brian’s next visit, check out his advice below, then head over to LinkedIn and/or Logger Link to connect!

Tell us about your current work.

I work at Microsoft, a global leader in technology where the mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. My role as a Sr Director of Partner Sales (www.linkedin.com/in/briangalicia), is leading a team to help Independent Software Vendors (ISV) maximize their use of the Microsoft Cloud to add value to our joint customers to grow revenue and business for both companies.

How did you get in to this line of work?

My career path has been quite dynamic. I started as an intern at a local software company, which gave me a strong foundation in understanding customer needs. Over time, I transitioned into more sales and leadership roles, eventually leading me to Microsoft. Here, I’ve been able to combine my passion for technology with my skills in sales/business strategy to help customers and partners succeed.

How did Puget Sound prepare you for your career path?

My education at the University of Puget Sound was instrumental in shaping my career.

The liberal arts curriculum provided me with a well-rounded education, fostering critical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving skills. These skills have been invaluable throughout my career, enabling me to adapt to various roles and challenges.

I also met my spouse at Puget Sound, and have maintained long-standing relationships with many alumni who I went to school with.

Did you use CES when you were a student?

Yes, I did use Career and Employment Services (CES) at Puget Sound. The experience was incredibly beneficial.

CES provided resources like career counseling, resume workshops, and networking events, which helped me prepare for the job market and connect with potential employers. Their support was crucial in helping me navigate the early stages of my career.

A lot has changed — I didn’t have the advantage of LinkedIn or the internet to build digital relationships as students have access to now.

How would you describe networking to someone who’s new to the concept and/or nervous about it?

Networking is about building relationships with people who can offer advice, support, and opportunities.

For someone new or nervous about it, I recommend starting small. Attend events, join professional groups, and connect with people on LinkedIn, particularly warm relationships such as professors, classmates, and alumni.

Remember, it’s about genuine connections, not just collecting contacts. Approach it with curiosity and a willingness to learn from others.

What is the most important part of a LinkedIn profile?

The headline, summary, and a professional picture are the most important parts of a LinkedIn profile.

This is the first thing people see, and it should clearly convey who you are, what you do, and what you’re looking for.

A strong headline and summary can make a great first impression and attract the right opportunities. Make sure everything is personalized and not generic.

Final advice?

Stay curious and open to learning. The job market is constantly evolving. Being adaptable and willing to learn new skills can set you apart.

Don’t be afraid to seek out mentors and ask for help when you need it. Building a supportive network can make a big difference in your career journey.

Also, leverage the Alumni page of Puget Sound on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/school/univpugetsound/people/) which will give you visibility to possible connections who you can build a digital relationship with.
